Resumo
The area of São Luís map (SA-23'), edited by the Conselho Nacional de Geografia (scale 1: 1. 000.000), in the State of Pará include~ the region between the parallels 0° and 4° S, meridian 48° W Gr . and the Gurupi river, within the limits of the states of Pará and Maranhão. According
actual knowledge the are a presents the following stratigraphic sequence :
Quaternary clay, sand, mangrove deposits etc.
Tertiary continental: Barreiras group -marine : Pirabas formation
Cretaceous -Itapecuru formation (?)
Pre-Cambrian -Gurupi series gneissic basement
There are in the area, regions for which geological knowledge is very precarious, and because of that, some d.oubts are forwarded chiefly with reference to what is taken as cretaceous (Itapecuru formation).
