Rurópolis is a municipality in Pará that houses numerous sandstone caves with prehistoric paintings and engravings located in aphotic and twilight zones. The study of the 110 Cave revealed no material remains in the excavations, alongside highly diverse rock paintings and engravings. The examination of this cave raised a series of questions regarding potential ritual practices at the site.

We present the initial results of archaeological research in open air sites from the Monte Alegre region, previously known for the rock art sitesand records of early human occupation.Within a regional approach, we now aim at investigating the diversity of archaeological records in the area, including late precolonial open air sites starting at XIIIth century. The ceramic data indicates that, despite the proximity of Santarém, Monte Alegre materials display local characteristics, herein defined by the selection and combination of some elements from ceramic repertoires of near by areas and from others with extensive regional distribution. Finally we discuss the fragmentary nature of style and how they can emerge out of processes of stylistic flow favored by extended social networks.
New data from Pedra Pintada cave, brazilian Amazon: technological analyses of the lithic industries in the Pleistocene–Holocene

Por muitos anos, a existência de antigos assentamentos humanos na Amazônia foi considerada impossível, especialmente aqueles tão antigos quanto 12.000 AP, conforme encontrados na Caverna da Pedra Pintada em Monte Alegre, no estado do Pará, por Anna Roosevelt e colaboradores na década de 1990 e pela equipe de Edithe Pereira em 2014. Neste artigo, apresentamos os resultados das análises tecnológicas das ferramentas bifaciais encontradas na caverna, com foco nas matérias-primas, técnicas, métodos de afeiçoamento e retoque, e procedimentos técnicos. As análises indicam um lascamento cuidadoso, sem erros, em centenas de lascas nas fases de afeiçoamento e retoque, bem como ferramentas fragmentadas com falhas. Sempre que possível, comparamos os resultados com os dados publicados por Roosevelt e colaboradores em 1996 sobre o mesmo sítio.
A cronologia das pinturas rupestres da Caverna da Pedra Pintada, Monte Alegre, Pará: revisão histórica e novos dados

This article presents a summary of the various theories about the chronology of the cave paintings from Monte Alegre, as well as the formal characteristics of the themes represented at the Caverna da Pedra Pintada site. The main goal is to identify differences in style and consequently propose different periods for the execution of these paintings. To provide context for the cave paintings at this site, excavations were carried out in 2014 near one of the painted walls. A set of dates were associated with the recovered material, such as pigments, artifacts, and charcoal, as well as soot stains over the paintings; this information offers possibilities to contextualize the rock art activity at this site.
Da penumbra à escuridão - a arte rupestre das cavernas de Rurópolis, Pará, Amazônia, Brasil

In the Brazilian Amazon, rock paintings and engravings are mainly present in open air areas. There are only few records about the presence of rock art within caves. Rurópolis, a county located in the southwestern part of the state of Pará, seems to be an exception, since it houses an important speleological province with lots of sandstone caves. Some of these caves house prehistoric paintings and engravings whose technical and stylistic features are unmatched in the Amazon. However, the uniqueness and main feature of this rock art lies in the fact they are located in aphotic areas of the caves.
