Resumo

Notes on the life history of the Hairy Hermit (Glaucis hirsuta) were gathered in the Museum Goeldi graden. The nest is built, on the leaves of palmae trees such as the Açai (Euterpe oleracea), the Jupatí (Raphia taedigea) and the Marajá (Bactris major). It is found the clearings near human habitations, in second growth forest and, in "igapó" forest. The nest materials are plant fibres, small roots, spiderwebs, dried leaves, very slender twigs, and lichens. The nest is like a bag with two parts: the first one is the egg receptacle and the second is the filamentous continuation beneath the egg receptacle, woven on the palm leaf. The total lenghth of the nest is 20 to 30 centimeters and the egg receptacle 3x5 centimeters in diameter. The nest is located one to ten meters above the ground. The nesting period extends from may to october or early November. Nest construction requires about eight days. Two eggs are laid usually on alternative days. The incubation periods is 16 daus, and the nestling period 22 days. data on attentive pretiods in given. Song and call notes are described as well as the behavior of the nestlings.
