The systems of person marking on the verb in Tiriyo.

Graças ao material disponível no Museu Goeldi e à ajuda de uma informante que se encontra em Belém no momento, foi possível estudar a língua Tiriyó, uma língua Karíb pouco conhecida com cerca de novecentos falantes, metade dos quais no Brasil, no Parque Indígena do Tumucumaque. Após a obtenção de um quadro fonológico preliminar da língua, foram analisados aspectos da sua sintaxe e morfologia. De particular interesse foi a descoberta de quatro grupos diferentes de prefixos verbais para a marcação de pessoa nos verbos intransitivos. A semelhança de alguns desses prefixos com os usados para identificar ora o sujeito, ora o objeto nos verbos transitivos sugeriu a análise em termos de um sistema ativo/estativo. Morfologicamente, o sistema de marcação de pessoa do Tiriyó se aproxima bastante de um sistema ativo/ estativo, mas a correlação semântica é menos coerente do que se poderia esperar. Três dos quatro sistemas de prefixos são bastante semelhantes, podendo ser indiossincráticos. Com a continuação da pesquisa, espera-se poder resolver definitivamente esta questão.
Resumo
Thanks to the material available at the Goeldi Museum and the help of an informant who is currently in Belém, it was possible to study the Tiriyó language, a little known Karib language with about nine hundred speakers, half of them in Brazil, in the Tumucumaque Indigenous Park. After obtaining a preliminary phonological picture of the language, aspects of its syntax and morphology were analyzed. Of particular interest was the discovery of four different groups of verbal prefixes for person marking in intransitive verbs. The similarity of some of these prefixes to those used to identify either the subject or the object in transitive verbs suggested analysis in terms of an active/stative system. Morphologically, the Tiriyó person-marking system comes quite close to an active/stative system, but the semantic correlation is less coherent than one might expect. Three of the four prefix systems are quite similar, and may be indiosyncratic. With further research, it is hoped to be able to definitively resolve this question.
