Carlos Estevão de Oliveira e o Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (1930-1945)

Abstract

This article belongs to the field known as History of Science and its theme is the development of the research institutes in Brazil, the object being the scientific production attached to the Emilio Goeldi Museum through the 1930’s until 1945, when the museum was directed by Carlos Estevão de Oliveira. To achieve these goals, we propose a journey throughout the bibliography written about the historical development of the institution and some important aspects of the political and intellectual scenario of the time, with the director’s biography interacting with these elements. We departed from the understanding that the scientists connected with the museum can be seen as “readers” of the Amazon, as their production gave a single meaning to the object and to the context analyzed, immersed in a gathering of social representations about the area.
