Resumen : | Archeological ,investigations were undertaken in two cemetery sites of the Aristé Phase, the last culture to occupy the northern part of the Territory of Amapá, Brazil. The first site, Vila Velha, is on the left bank of the Rio Cassiporé, 80 kilometers above the mouth. It covers a large area, the front part of which is occupied by the modem town. Two excavations were made, one in the part of the site nearest the river and the other in the most distant sector. Burial urns were encountered 10 -20 cm.below the surface. No systematic arrangement could be detected. The vessels from Vila Velha I, farthest from the river, were buried close together and frequently touching. They contained dirt and: bone fragments. At Vila Velha II, near the shore, the jars were widely spaced. All but one contained cremated remains and all had glass trade beads associated. The second site, Ilha das Igaçabas, is on the Igarapé Grande, southeast of Vila Velha. Here II broken burial urns were lying on the surface of a small knoll in the swamp. Associated with the large jars were a nwnber of small offertory bowIs of unusual form and well executed decoration. Some contained glass trade beads. Horizontal stratigraphy at Vila Velha, analysis of the characteristics of the pottery andof the buriaI pattern on the basis of the framework established by Meggers and Evans(1957) makes it possible to place these three Aristé manifestations in chronological order. Vila Velha I is the oldest, Ilha das Igaçabas next, and Vila Velha II the most recent. This sequence is characterized by: 1) a decrease in the size of the burial vessels, correlated with the change from secundary buriaIto cremation; 2) a change from simplé painting Iimited to the neck and shoulders of the vessel to elabora te over-all designs;and 3)substitution of well made painted bowIs for grater bowls as urn lids. An attempt was made to identify the archeologicaI Aristé Phase with one of the tribes reported historically in the northern part of the Territory of Amapá. The Palikúr have been most often mentioned as the probable descendants. Although it is difficult to find very elose resemblances. between Palikúr pottery elements and those of the Aristé Phase, some significant details are similar and suggestive. Final solution of this problem will depend on future research. |
