Obras raras: manual de identificação, conservação e gestão de obras raras da biblioteca do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi

Abstract

Books considered rare, by any criteria, always deserve special treatment. However, the value of these documents varies according to those who use, collect, sell or preserve them. Thus, for large booksellers, they represent a very interesting and lucrative source of income. For bibliophiles, they represent the perfect combination of art, printing techniques and erudition. Researchers consider them an indispensable resource for retrospective studies in the different branches of Science. In view of this context, we sought to prepare a document that follows the lines of a manual, as an instrument that allows for the identification, description, conservation, storage and management of the old and rare collection of the Library of the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Ultimately, we hope that this manual will serve as guidance to the technicians of the Domingos Soares Ferreira Penna Library regarding the appropriate treatment of this type of material.
