Abstract

This work deals with the life of children in a fishing community, based on anthropological and sociological literature on fishing societies and information from Obidense residents in Belém. The objective of the research involves the description of the situation of children in a fishing community in the Middle Amazon, evaluating their importance in the productive family structure. However, the financial situation of the country has limited the resources for research, preventing the execution of field work, opting, then, to make an evaluation of the position of the child in the communities of Óbidos, through the conception of the residents of this locality, residents in Belém. We used bibliographical research, combined with information obtained from interviews with people from the Óbidos region. The contact with the people was based on references obtained from Goeldi Museum researchers who have already carried out research in the Middle Amazon. The information we obtained shows a clear sexual division of labor. This is evident in the reports about the children's activities, where the learning of fishing practices is exclusively directed to boys and domestic work to girls. In the literature, there is not much attention given to the importance of children's work as a relevant factor for the social reproduction of these communities, which find in fishing and agriculture their form of subsistence.
