Abstract: The Emilio Goeldi Museum of Para has its origins in the Philomathic Association (Friends of Science), created by Domingos Soares Ferreira Penna on October 6, 1866. It is the first and most important center for scientific studies of the natural and sociocultural systems of the Amazon. Throughout its history, it has cataloged over 4.5 million items from various organisms in different parts of the vast Amazon region. This extraordinary collection is a worldwide reference on the Amazon biome, consisting of 19 collections subdivided into 40 subcollections related to the human, biological, social, and earth sciences. Through the "Scientific Collections of the Goeldi Museum" series, we will explore all this richness, learning a bit about each of these collections.

Abstract: The book Peixes Teleósteos da Costa Norte do Brasil is the result of the investment by the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi in basic research, such as the inventory and cataloging of the marine fauna of the Amazon coast. Through the Institutional Capacity Building Program (MCTIC/CNPq), it was possible to incorporate Dr. Alexandre Marceniuk, specialist in marine fish systematics and one of the organizers of this work, to the staff of researchers at the Goeldi Museum. One of the direct results of this effort was the improvement of information in the Zoological Collection of the Museu Goeldi. There were also important indirect results, such as the registration of several unknown species of
Amazon, which occurred either through the recognition of new species among those already collected or through the collection of new records for the region. This information is extremely valuable for understanding the diversity of the Amazonian fauna, as well as for understanding the history of the region.
The conception of the book, and all the work related to its development, also led to the establishment of important partnerships between the Goeldi Museum and the main institutions dedicated to research on the Amazon coast, such as the National Center for Research and Conservation of Northern Marine Biodiversity (CEPNOR /ICMBio) and the Federal Rural University of the Amazon (UFRA). The result of this partnership is the publication of the first catalog of species of fish fauna from the lesser known region of Brazil, literature that will be fundamental to support scientific research in the marine environment, as well as the exploitation of natural resources in the second most
production in Brazil.
